Laptops

Laptops we bought, worked on for weeks and put against pricier rivals. Most people do not need to spend [$1,800] on a laptop, and this page is only about the machine itself, not the dock, monitor or keyboard you might plug into it.

Buying guide

What actually matters when you buy a laptop

RAM before processor

Going from [8 GB] to [16 GB] changes daily use more than one chip generation does. Most people run out of memory long before they run out of speed.

The screen is what you stare at

A dim panel makes a fast laptop miserable. [300] nits is the floor for a room with a window, and matte beats glossy anywhere near one.

Battery claims are optimistic

Expect roughly [30%] less than the box says with the screen at a usable brightness. Our battery column is measured at [50%], doing normal work.

Buy the dock and monitor separately

The laptop itself is the thing worth comparing here. Docks, monitors and keyboards have their own picks on the Computer Accessories page, so we do not repeat them on this one.
